Haul Truck Operator – various locations

The Haul Truck Operator is responsible to safely operate a rigid frame and articulated rock truck throughout the mine/project site carrying rock or overburden as per the specifications and direction from the Foremen and Superintendent. It is the responsibility of the operator, to complete these tasks in a safe and efficient manner to avoid injury to themselves or others or damage to the equipment, other property or to the environment.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Operate haul trucks in a safe and environmentally proficient manner, following all safety standard operating procedures and task-specific protocols implemented;
  • Consistently achieve maximum production while not compromising safety protocols;
  • Manage assigned work location following all SOP’s and safety standards with little direction or supervision;
  • Ensures all paperwork is legibly completed as required and turned into the Foremen and/or Superintendent daily;
  • Completes their daily equipment log and safety checks on each unit operated;
  • Report any equipment deficiencies as they encounter them and advise of any repairs or maintenance required on equipment;
  • Check for, and report, safety hazards on the roads, dumps, in the pit and any other work area;
  • Ability to work in adherence to safety practices, procedures and work site regulations and promote safe work behaviour in others;
  • Perform necessary maintenance and preventative maintenance to assigned equipment as directed;
  • Must keep unit clean;
  • Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operation areas AT ALL TIMES;
  • Park the equipment in a safe manner when not in use;
  • Maintain proper coordination and cooperation with the Traffic Control and/or Dispatch and other operators while working, so that normal activities are not disrupted;
  • Other duties may be assigned by your Supervisor, as required.
  • Minimum 1 year experience with CAT 777 (or larger) - operating and dumping on slopes;

Required Skills/Experience

  • Have a Safety-Focused approach to work, and ability to handle and assist in emergency situations;
  • Utilize methods and techniques for proper set up of the haul truck to maximize efficiency;
  • Must have physical ability to withstand long hours in a strenuous and potentially high hazard work environment;
  • Ability to follow procedures, verbal directions and hand signals;
  • Strong commitment to be a team player, build trust and be accountable;
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Excellent spatial orientation and sense of space, direction and elevation;
  • A high level of self-management & personal leadership skills;
  • Proactive and punctual;
  • Eagerness to learn and grow;
  • Must be able to work in a safety-conscious manner;
  • This position requires mobility;
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in extreme temperatures (both hot & cold), and other unusual elements, such as loud noise, dirt, dust, fumes, ice/snow/mud, etc;
  • Able to work remotely from home, typically on a 2 week on / 2 week off rotation (exact rotation to be determined depending on the project needs);
  • Able to work up to 12-hour shifts (either days or nights as needed);
  • Must be willing to travel to the remote work site;
  • Successfully pass Fit for Duty pre-employment testing (drug and alcohol screening), if required.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job the employee will be exposed to extensive moderate to heavy manual labour for prolonged periods of time. This will include ongoing maintenance and cleaning of working area. Worker will be required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above their shoulders. Ability to climb ladders is necessary. Specific vision abilities required by this job include acute central and peripheral vision as well as depth and color perception.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions; and extreme cold and/or heat. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high. Dusty working conditions could also necessitate the need for a respirator to be worn. Employee can expect a variety of tasks in a high paced working environment for the duration of shift.
