EXTENDED PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY

 

New information about your role in the EPR Program!

As we know, the Government of Yukon is moving ahead with the implementation of its Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program — a regulatory shift that will impact how certain products are collected, recycled, and managed at end-of-life in the territory. This initiative is designed to reduce waste and promote sustainability within the territory by enhancing recycling effort

As a business, you may be affected by this new program if you:

  • Manufacture designated materials
  • Import designated materials into the Yukon
  • Sell designated materials in the Yukon

 A list of designated materials for each category can be found within the plans linked below. We encourage all Yukon businesses to review this update and take steps to understand your responsibilities within the program.

 


 

What Should Your Business Do?

Check if you're a “steward”Steward = Business. Businesses that introduce designated products into the Yukon market must comply. Exemptions are possible.

Contact the appropriate Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) listed below to learn more and register. The PRO can inform you if you are eligible for exemption. NOTE: You may need to register in more than one PRO!

Budget for Environmental Handling Charges (EHCs) – These will help fund collection and recycling efforts.

Stay informed – Implementation details and compliance resources will be added to yukon.ca/EPR and whitehorsechamber.ca throughout 2025

The EPR Program is broken into 4 main categories:

1. BatteriesCall2Recycle
Program starts: June 24, 2025
Applies to: Single-use and rechargeable batteries (≤5 kg).

2. Automotive ProductsInterchange Recycling
Program starts: August 1, 2025
Includes: Used oil, antifreeze, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), oil filters, and automotive product containers up to 55L.
Collection options: Registered depots, commercial pickup for bulk generators.

3. Packaging & Paper ProductsCircular Materials
Program starts: November 1, 2025
Includes: Paper, cardboard, rigid/flexible plastics, metal, glass packaging, and single-use packaging-like items.
Services will include curbside and depot collection depending on community.

4. Hazardous and Special ProductsProduct Care
Program expected to start: Fall 2025
This plan is still in development and will cover products such as solvents, flammable liquids, and corrosives.
