Position: Harm Reduction Worker
Status: Full-time (35 hours/week)
Contract: Short-term contract until March 31, 2025
Shifts are generally between 8:30 AM–4:30 PM or 9:30 AM–5:30 PM Monday to Friday with occasional evening and weekend work (including two Outreach Van evening shifts per month).
The Harm Reduction Worker works collaboratively with Blood Ties staff, community partners, and people with lived experience to deliver frontline harm reduction services across our programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Distribute harm reduction supplies and provide education on safer substance use, overdose prevention, naloxone, and sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections through the Needle and Pipe window.
- Assemble harm reduction and hygiene kits.
- Order, organize, and manage inventory of harm reduction and hygiene supplies from local, national, and international suppliers.
- Coordinate bulk orders and provide harm reduction education and support to community partners and Knowledge Keepers throughout rural Yukon.
- Deliver harm reduction and naloxone training to staff, community members, and people with lived experience.
- Provide immunoassay strip drug-checking services and maintain related supplies.
- Design and deliver harm reduction materials and programming responsive to community needs and best practices.
- Monitor emerging issues affecting services or community members and contribute to problem-solving.
- Track program statistics and contribute to routine reporting.
- Provide frontline support at the drop-in centre, supervised consumption site, and Outreach Van programs.
- Contribute to a respectful, welcoming, and tidy harm reduction environment.
- Safely collect and dispose of used substance use equipment.
- Maintain confidential records in accordance with privacy requirements.
- Follow safety protocols related to injury prevention, overdoses, and critical incidents.
Required Qualifications
- Experience supporting marginalized populations.
- Experience coordinating or delivering health- or wellness-related services.
- Strong understanding of harm reduction principles and a non-judgmental approach to substance use.
- Experience working with Indigenous peoples and communities.
- Knowledge of cultural safety and trauma-informed care.
- Ability to set and maintain boundaries in complex situations.
- Post-secondary education in social, human, or health services or equivalent lived/professional experience.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR.
- Comfort with Microsoft, Google Workspace, and Zoom.
- Valid driver’s licence and clear driver’s abstract.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds and work on your feet.
Preference will be given to candidates with lived or living experience of substance use and Indigenous applicants. We encourage applicants to self-identify if comfortable.
