Dease River First Nation is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as Land Guardian for the community of Good Hope Lake to protect and steward lands and waters, acting as the ‘eyes and ears’ on the ground. This role will include monitoring wildlife, managing protected areas, restoring ecosystems, and educating communities about land use. As Land Guardian, you will also play a crucial role in cultural revitalization and promoting Indigenous knowledge and traditional practices.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Monitoring and Patrol:
Actively patrol and monitor lands and waters to observe and report on various issues like wildlife populations, illegal activities, and development projects. -
Manage protected areas:
Implementing and enforcing regulations within protected areas, such as parks or reserves, to ensure their conservation. -
Data Collection and Analysis:
Gather data on environmental conditions, wildlife populations, and other relevant information to inform management decisions and research. -
Ecosystem Restoration:
Participate in projects to restore degraded ecosystems, such as replanting forests or rehabilitating streams. -
Community Engagement:
Educate the community and visitors about cultural values, responsible land use, and the importance of protecting the environment. -
Cultural Revitalization:
Support cultural programs, youth mentorships, and language revitalization initiatives to strengthen Indigenous cultural identity. -
Boardroom Presence:
Be involved in discussions and decision-making processes related to resource management and land use within their communities.
Qualifications:
Land Guardian candidates should have a strong interest in land stewardship and knowledge of the area’s traditional territory and culture, and some field experience.

Education and experience:
Grade 12 or equivalent, with post-secondary education in related fields like biology, resource management, or First Nations governance being an asset. -
Skills and knowledge:
Strong understanding of habitats, familiarity with environmental issues, proficiency in using GPS equipment, and computer skills. -
Physical fitness and abilities:
Ability to hike, work outdoors in various conditions, and potentially lift up to 50 lbs. -
Certifications and training:
Criminal record check, bear awareness training, wilderness safety and survival first aid, and potentially Level 2 Occupational First Aid are desirable. -
Cultural knowledge:
Familiar with DRFN culture and traditions. - Able to work in a team environment.

Salary:
To be negotiated depending on qualifications and experience.
Based on full-time position, 35 hours, 5 days per week.
