Yukon News, an award-winning leader in Northern journalism, is seeking a driven, experienced reporter to fill a vital role within our newsroom under the Local Journalism Initiative (LJI). Based in Whitehorse, you will focus on Civic Journalism, providing the territory with essential coverage of democratic institutions, politics, crime, and education.
This is more than a reporting job; it is an opportunity to produce high-impact journalism that enhances community engagement. Your work will appear on yukon-news.com, in the Yukon News print edition, and be distributed nationally via the Canadian Press.

  • Multimedia Coverage: Attend press conferences, community events, and breaking news scenes to capture photos, video, and interviews.
  • Digital First: File stories and visual assets on tight deadlines for digital platforms, including live-posting to social media during breaking news.
  • Editorial Excellence: Produce clean copy adhering to Canadian Press style, conducting rigorous fact-checking and research.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the editorial team to strategize on daily news coverage and long-term features.

Qualifications

  • Experience: Previous experience in a newsroom environment with a portfolio demonstrating strong writing and photography skills is preferred.
