Expression of Interest: Sound Designer – Arctic Winter Games 2026 Cultural Program
The Whitehorse 2026 Arctic Winter Games (AWG) is seeking a skilled and creative Sound Designer to join the team responsible for delivering the Cultural Festival during Games Week, from March 8–15, 2026, in Whitehorse, Yukon.
This initiative is a unique opportunity to introduce performing arts programming to AWG participants and spectators, while showcasing Yukon talent and supporting the local cultural sector. The Sound Designer will play a critical role in ensuring high-quality sound experiences for performers and audiences across various pop-up performances and events.
About the Role
Under the direction of the Cultural Program Producer and in collaboration with the Cultural Program Team, the Sound Designer will:

  • Oversee sound design and technical audio requirements for all Cultural Festival performances, ensuring professional sound quality at various sports and community venues.
  • Assist in the setup, operation, and teardown of sound equipment at pop-up performance locations.
  • Collaborate with the Producer and Stage Manager to create soundscapes and audio effects that enhance the performances and align with the artistic vision of the program.
  • Conduct site visits with the team to assess sound needs for each venue and ensure suitability for performers and audiences.
  • Provide on-site audio support during rehearsals and performances, troubleshooting issues as they arise to ensure smooth execution.
  • Work closely with performers to ensure their specific sound requirements are met, including microphone setup, sound balance, and playback of pre-recorded tracks.
  • Coordinate with the Producer to source, rent, and return sound equipment, ensuring all required gear is available for the duration of the festival.
  • Ensure safety protocols and proper equipment handling, fostering a respectful workplace environment for all participants.
  • Submit a final written report summarizing sound design processes, challenges, and recommendations for future events.

  • A problem-solving mindset and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Familiarity with venue acoustics and the unique challenges of pop-up performances in diverse locations.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills to meet the demands of a fast-paced production schedule.
