Job Description: Wildlife Care and Rehabilitation Technician
The successful candidate will be working in the Animal Care Department at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve (YWP), a non-profit organization certified with Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums. This position contributes to the core daily needs of the YWP animal collection as well as the rehabilitation of wildlife at the facility.
This position includes weekends, morning/evening shifts, and holidays up to 40hrs/week. Part time positions up to 24 hrs/week may also be available. The Yukon Wildlife Preserve is located at KM 8, Takhini Hot Springs Road, 30km from downtown Whitehorse, Yukon.
The YWP offers a unique opportunity to learn about the behaviour of various species of Yukon native wildlife while providing daily care to more than 130 animals in YWP collection, as well as injured and orphaned wildlife in rehabilitation. While interesting, satisfying and diverse, the work is physically demanding and at times occurs under difficult conditions and inclement weather. As staff and public safety is a top priority, appropriate training and equipment will be provided to meet Yukon Occupational Health and Safety standards.
This position will be trained and supervised by the Veterinarian and Animal Care Manager, Dr. Huisman. The start date available for this position is January 5th, 2026 open until filled.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Preparing food and feeding/watering animals daily
- Maintain and improve animal enclosures
- Monitoring health and behaviour of animals
- Accurate record keeping
- Cleaning and organizing equipment
- Assisting with medical procedures
- Sample collection
- Cleaning, feeding/watering, and monitoring carnivore feeder animals (mice & quail)
- Animal Care building maintenance
- Collect browse and distribute to animal enclosures
- Implement species-specific environmental enrichment protocols
- General maintenance related to animal care
- Mentor volunteers during animal care related activities
- Other duties as required
Minimum Requirements:
- Living in/near or ability to relocate to Whitehorse, Yukon
- Standard First Aid Certificate (this can be obtained once receiving a job offer)
- Valid Class 5 drivers license with clean drivers abstract
- Tetanus vaccination
- Wildlife Rehabilitation Course (this can be obtained once receiving a job offer)
- Ability to repetitively lift up to 30lbs, occasionally lift up to 80 lbs.
- Ability to prioritize health and safety
- Comfortable working outside in all weather conditions
Qualifications and Assets:
- Previous experience in the veterinary field, wildlife rehabilitation, farm work, or biology/environment science is considered an asset.
- Academic, traditional, or working knowledge of Yukon native species is considered an asset.
- Patience, attention to detail, flexibility/adaptability to challenging situations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of the team, reliable, neat and detail-orientated, good oral communication skills, and excellent problem-solving abilities.
